Toronto Catholic District School Board Partners with Energy Advantage Inc. to Evaluate Building Designs

Burlington, Ontario, 13-December-2010 - Energy Advantage Inc., a leading energy and sustainability management provider, today announced that Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) has selected Energy Advantage to evaluate building designs of seventeen schools, which includes twelve existing and five new elementary schools. Energy Advantage will evaluate each building’s energy use to identify energy savings opportunities.

As an educational institution, TCDSB has the responsibility to provide a wide range of learning experiences in a quality environment. With new classroom additions being planned, TCDSB is seeking to increase the energy efficiency of its building designs.

“TCDSB is committed to improving the environment for future generations, and we are very proud of the ongoing efforts of our central Environment Committee as well as the many active Environment Clubs in our school communities,” says Acting Director of Education Angela Gauthier. “We are pleased with the opportunity to collaborate on designing schools that are more energy efficient and sustainable, and which better reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

For the additions, if the designs can achieve 30% energy efficiency over the Model National Energy Building Code then the TCDSB can expect an incentive of approximately three thousand per school. More importantly with energy costs continuing to rise, a 30% increase in energy efficiency will result in energy savings annually for the entire life of the building. For the new schools, if the designs can achieve 30% energy efficiency over the Model National Energy Building Code then the TCDSB can expect an incentive of approximately thirty thousand per school. The information provided can be used in future projects, leading to the development of revised Board standards.

“Buildings are among the largest end user of energy. A great first step towards better energy management is to evaluate the energy efficiency of a building’s operations,” says Glen Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Energy Solutions & Operations, Energy Advantage. “This evaluation will identify consumption patterns, compare building metrics to industry code and reveal areas to improve inefficiencies for TCDSB.”

Energy Advantage will assess TCDSB’s seventeen building designs as well as identify and apply for applicable energy incentives on their behalf. Energy Advantage will review drawings, major equipment, automation systems, determine current energy performance level and simulate the building design to identify ways to improve overall inefficiency.

Energy Advantage has completed over one hundred and fifty building simulations, saved over three million in annual combined cost-savings and secured over two million in incentive funding for its customers.
