Incentive programs available this summer

Toronto Hydro Program

Toronto Hydro is again launching its summer challenge project as part of the PowerWISE Business Incentive Program. Last year this project resulted in 153,000 (28.5%) of their residential customers reducing their energy use by ten percent. Customers who achieved this level of cut-back were rewarded with ten percent credit towards their next bill. Toronto Hydro hopes to achieve similar success levels in the 2007 summer challenge period. For participating customers, which this year will include all Toronto Hydro customers, this will represent an opportunity to make long-term financial savings on energy.

Toronto Hydro Example: Peak Summer Period:1

A building owner wants to upgrade his existing chiller to a high-efficiency chiller system. The Base Case is the current system's peak kW used to cool the 30,000 sq ft, single storey office building, primarily during the months of July through September with an existing peak kW load of 423.68 kW. The peak kW load of the new high-efficiency chiller system to be installed is 373.68 kW -- a reduction of peak kW load of 50 kW from the existing system. (Calculation: 423.68 kW of existing peak kW load - 373.68 kW of installed high-efficiency peak demand = 50 kW of reduction of peak kW load):

Base Case Calculations (the building's current operation and performance):

423.68 peak kW – 373.68 peak kW = 50kW Existing peak kW – Proposed peak kW = Peak kW Reduction

Incentive Calculations:

50 peak kW x $150.00 per peak kW = $7,500.00 Peak kW Reduction x $150.00 peak kW Incentive = Incentive Value

In this example, full peak kW reductions are paid since the reductions occur during the summer period.

NRCan eco Energy Program

NRCan is also offering financial support to commercial organizations committed to implementing energy saving strategies as part of their ecoENERGY Retrofit program. Under this scheme, ecoEnergy is offering building owners as much as $10 per gigajoule of energy saved and twenty-five percent of the start-up cost of implementing new energy saving projects (up to $50,000). NRCan has invested $220 million into a four-year plan to make this possible.

Priority will be given to proposals for projects:

  • with multiple or complex energy efficiency measures;
  • with technical issues beyond the capability of the building owners;
  • that use innovative technologies or renewable resources; and
  • from first-time applicants

ecoEnergy Incentive Example:

$10 / GJ or 25% of eligible costs up to $50,000

HVAC 3927GJ savings @ $95,000
Lighting 1773GJ savings @ $113,500

Total 5700GJ @ $10/GJ = $57,000 capped at $50,000

Project Total Costs $208, 500 x 25% = $52,125 capped at $50,000

Government programs are offering incentives to end-users to become serious about energy conservation and efficiency in order to use less energy during the upcoming summer months. The Clinton Foundation postulates that companies partaking in their retrofit program will potentially reduce their energy use by 20 to 50 per cent. Consequently, these reductions could mean a significant decrease in heat-trapping carbon emissions, as well as cost savings on utility bills.
