06/16/2008 - B.C. Carbon Tax

Effective July 1st

On July 1st, 2008, B.C.’s carbon tax will take effect. The carbon tax was introduced in B.C.’s 2008 budget and will be applied at the consumer level. It has been structured as a revenue-neutral tax by incorporating reductions to both corporate and personal income tax, and through the payment of a Climate Action Credit to lower income households.

The carbon tax will appear as a line item on invoices for most fuels, and will be applied to all carbon-based fuels. The tax is based on the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced. Fuels will be taxed initially at $10 per tonne of GHGs produced, and the rate will escalate to $30 per tonne of GHGs by 2012. Examples of the carbon tax rate on common fuels are listed below.
